DemoEnvironment
— for the dissemination of environmental technology

Since 2007 the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) has run the DemoEnvironment Programme as a commission from of Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The Programme aims to introduce modern, environment-friendly technology solutions in Sida's partner countries. In spring 2011 the Programme components are being developed further and we are not accepting any new applications for the moment.

The Programme is closed for applications until further notice

DemoEnvironment is unique as an operational tool to build concrete examples of business cooperation between countries like China or South Africa and Sweden and other European countries with leading positions in environmental technology. The Programme runs about 90 projects; in general they consist of a delivery of environmental technology such as solar cells and smart electricity grids, waste systems and water purification and biogas plants. This popular Programme has mainly been aimed at buyers in Sida´s partner countries that have established a business contact with a seller outside their home market. Co-financing from DemoEnvironment makes it possible to invest in new, competitive products and systems.
In autumn 2010 an evaluation of the Programme was conducted, intended to examine the objectives set and effects achieved. The evaluator concludes that the Programme fulfils the aim of reaching out with new environmental technology on the relevant markets and that DemoEnviroment is one of few known instruments that involve the business sector and combine environmental objectives and development cooperation objectives with the promotion of companies´ business opportunities. On account of this development work, DemoEnviroment is not accepting new applications in spring 2011. We will post information about new rounds of applications as soon as decisions have been taken.

Five countries have priority

The aim of the DemoEnvironment Programme is to give around 40 of Sida's partner countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Central Europe the opportunity to use proven modern environmental technology solutions that are new to their country.

However, five countries have priority: Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Indonesia and China. Read more about the other countries selected using the links below.

The grant is available for technology that can contribute to sustainable urban development, such as waste management and renewable energy. In rural areas grants are only given to initiatives in renewable energy.

The buyer can apply for a grant for the purchase of equipment and of services needed for the equipment to function on the ground.

The grant ranges between SEK 500 000 and SEK 3 million.

Inspire others to follow its example

The project has to be implemented in a way that inspires others to follow its example, so that environmental technology can be spread in the country. This is the reason for the name of the form of support - demonstration project.

The buyer applies for the grant, and is also responsible for management and finances of the project.
Grants for buyers of environmental technology

DemoEnvironment also gives small and medium companies support for action intended to find a possible user of environmental technology in one of the selected countries. This is called a pilot study.
