A common town centre is helping
Haparanda and Tornio to grow

The aim of the Border square and canal construction project is to build a common central business district between Haparanda and Tornio to create new opportunities for business development and greater growth.

Since the 16th century Haparanda and its twin town of Tornio on the Finnish side of the border have been a lively meeting place and centre of border trade. Together the towns are now building a common city centre containing commerce, housing, education, public services, workplaces, culture and recreation from two countries. The new business moving in include IKEA, Ikano and Akelius.

Infrastructure that unites the two towns

“The project will create a functional unit, a pleasant and attractive environment between the two town centres with flexible traffic solutions that will benefit both business and people living in the area," says Göran Wigren, Planning Director in Haparanda Municipality.

“The project is an excellent model for European cooperation across national borders, which will lead to the establishment of new businesses and the creation of more jobs."

In summer 2010 construction work is in full progress. The towns are growing together across the border and are making it possible to create a unique meeting place. The attractive environment will draw lots of visitors both nationally and internationally.

According to Göran Wigren the project has learned quite a number of lessons along the way.
“For instance, we have learned how to handle legislation and building codes from two countries. In the future we will need to find models to enable the organisations of the two cities to look after the new centre together."
