Småland and the Islands: Commuting to work easier when new stations are built

The TSS — Tågstopp Södra Stambanan (New Southern Main Lines Stations) project is building new railway stations in Lammhult, Stockaryd and Moheda to make it easier for people to commute to work between the Kronoberg and Jönköping Counties.

A construction start meeting was held in 2010 and the target is for the stations to be ready in autumn 2011.

Several studies show that the region´s labour market is highly dependent on effective local public transport since this gives people the option of choosing between different types of jobs. This is particularly important in a region dominated by jobs in industry.

“By making it easier for people to commute we want to build a larger labour market region and create a broader and more gender-neutral labour market," says Eva Palmér, project manager.

Three new train stations

In addition to three new train stations, the project also includes a detailed description of what is to be done in the renovation of Växjö railway depot. This system procurement was completed in summer 2010. The actual renovation of Växjö railway depot will be completed in November 2012, but is not included in this project.

A third part of the project is a traffic study for Jönköping-Växjö. The procurement of the consultant to conduct this study was also done summer 2010.

A steering group and working groups containing representatives of municipalities, the Swedish Transport Administration, transport authorities and regions were appointed at the start of 2009 when the project got under way.

“All the groups are extremely active and cooperation in and between the groups and with other projects affected is going really well," notes Eva Palmér.
