The Impact of Culture - Creative businesses for sustainable cities

Welcome to Umeå on 23–24 September 2014!

As part of the Umeå2014 programme we invite you to an international conference focusing on how culture-driven growth contributes to sustainable urban development. All dimensions of sustainable development will be touched on by examples from both Umeå and other parts of the world.

The conference will include a variety of seminars. For example, meet:

Luís Felipe Barros da Luz & Leticia Scandolara da Luz from Lung in Porto Alegre Brazil, and hear them talk about WikiCity – a platform that engage citizens to develop sustainable cities.

Shin-pei Tsay, Director of Research and Development at Transit Center in New York, USA. A long with Elin Pietroni, Head of the comprehensive planning unit at Umeå Municipality, she will share her ideas on how we can re-think the methods of sustainable urban planning by involving creative and cultural businesses and education.

Aerian Rogers, Head of Development at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK. Ariean Rogers will tell us about regeneration through Culture.

The moderator for the conference will be Rasmus Wiinstedt Tscherning, Roskilde, Denmark, Center for Cultural and Experience Economy (CKO) and the European  Creative Industries Alliance (ECIA).

For who?

The conference addresses promotors of entrepreneurship and enterprise development within the cultural and creative industries. Government ministries, government agencies, county administrative boards, regions, municipalities, scholars and industry organisations and others involved in local and regional development including urban planning.

Directions: It is only 10 minutes walking distance between Umeå Center and Sliperiet, Umeå Arts Campus.

Walk along Storgatan direction east of Umeå. You’ll see the City church on your right side. After a few hundred meters, in the crossning Storgatan/Pilgatan, take right and walk another 200 m.

The conference fee is SEK 2000 (including VAT). Besides the conference itself, this also includes coffee/tea, lunch and dinner on day 1, and coffee and lunch on day 2.

The conference fee also includes entry to the Bildmuseet in Umeå (Centre for contemporary art and visual culture), a visit to an art installation in the urban environment entitled “Lev!”,   a guided tour of Guitars - The Museum, and the guided bus tour The Gendered Landscape of Umeå which also takes you to the airport in the afternoon of the final day of the conference.

Students have free admission to the conference.
